Effect of a diet enriched with green-lipped mussel on pain behavior and functioning in dogs with clinical osteoarthritis

This study looked at how feeding dogs a diet enriched with green-lipped mussels (GLM) could help improve pain and movement in dogs with osteoarthritis. The study found that after feeding dogs a GLM-enriched diet for 60 days, there was an increase in omega-3 fatty acids in their blood and an improvement in peak vertical force (PVF), which is a measure of how much force their limbs can produce. Owners also reported improvements in their dog's pain levels and overall activity. These results suggest that adding green-lipped mussels to a dog's diet could help reduce pain and improve mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis.

Influence of green lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) in alleviating signs of arthritis in dogs

This study looked at whether adding green-lipped mussel (GLM) to a dog's dry food could help improve symptoms of arthritis. The study included 31 dogs with varying degrees of arthritis and they were split into two groups. One group was given the dry food with 0.3% GLM powder added, while the other group was given the same food without GLM. After 6 weeks, the group that had been given the GLM showed significant improvement in their arthritis symptoms compared to the control group. Specifically, they had less joint pain and swelling. The findings provide strong evidence that GLM incorporated into a complete dry diet can help alleviate arthritis symptoms in dogs.

Evaluating Complementary Therapies for Canine Osteoarthritis Part I: Green-lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus)

In this study, researchers investigated the effects of a green-lipped mussel (GLM) supplement on dogs with chronic pain caused by osteoarthritis. The study involved 45 dogs that were randomly assigned to one of three groups, with each group receiving either the GLM supplement, a placebo, or a traditional pain medication (carprofen) for 8 weeks. After four weeks, the dogs were evaluated for mobility, pain, and other variables. The results showed that dogs in the GLM group experienced improvements in mobility and pain compared to the placebo group. While the GLM supplement was not as effective as the traditional pain medication, it did not cause any negative side effects. These findings suggest that GLM supplements may be a beneficial alternative for dogs who cannot take traditional pain medications.
