Fecal Microbiota, Bile Acids, Sterols, and Fatty Acids in Dogs with Chronic Enteropathy Fed a Home-Cooked Diet Supplemented with Coconut Oil

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) found in coconut oil can be easily absorbed by dogs and provide a source of energy to help manage digestive disorders. A study evaluated the effects of a home-cooked diet supplemented with virgin coconut oil (VCO) on dogs with chronic enteropathies. The dogs on the VCO diet showed improvements in clinical signs, reduced fecal fat excretion, and increased fecal moisture. Although there were no significant effects on fecal microbiota, the diet did increase the levels of certain beneficial fatty acids. These findings suggest that VCO could be a useful addition to a dog's diet, particularly for those with digestive issues.

Efficacy of a Therapeutic Diet on Dogs With Signs of Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS): A Prospective Double Blinded Placebo Controlled Clinical Study

Coconut oil, which contains a type of fat called medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), can significantly help older dogs suffering from a dementia-like condition. When these dogs were fed a diet with 6.5% MCT (found in coconut oil) for 90 days, they showed notable improvements in their symptoms. This suggests that coconut oil could be a useful addition to the diets of senior dogs to help manage age-related cognitive issues, much like dementia in humans. The benefits were even visible as early as 30 days into the diet.
